Dream Homes and their Energy Stories

By Carollyn Farrar, NW Natural

The Energy Performance Score (EPS) program has been used to measure the estimated energy use and carbon emissions of each home at the 2019 NW Natural Street of Dreams. The EPS also compares the home's energy use to a comparable Oregon code-built home and to one of similar size.

And, as in golf, a lower performance score is better.

Energy Trust of Oregon recommends the use of the EPS evaluation tool as an established measurement of new home energy efficiency. In general, EPS rated homes are built above code and are tested to verify that the home design and construction reflect the very best practices.

In new construction, the performance score is important in comparing the home energy profile to both a code-built home and a similar-sized Oregon home. Another particularly relevant aspect of the EPS evaluation involves estimation of a monthly energy cost the new home buyer can expect to pay.

The EPS tool also provides an assessment of the home’s carbon footprint.Again, the evaluation compares the home being assessed to the annual carbon emissions of a similar Oregon home and a code-built home.

  • Based on the EPS, the six NW Natural Street of Dreams homes have an average energy cost of only $128.50 per month. That’s a fairly low cost for luxury homes that average 3,975 square feet.
  • The energy scores range from 84 to 107. Compared to similar homes these showcase homes are 42% more efficient.

While you are visiting the show this year, look for the EPS sign at each home to learn more about the Energy Performance Score. If you are interested in learning more about the energy-efficient features that can contribute to a favorable Energy Performance Score and lower monthly energy bills, consider contacting Energy Trust of Oregon about upgrading insulation, improving lighting, installing efficient windows and improving both space and water heating equipment.

NW Natural offers incentives to homeowners that can lower energy costs with the installation of a new natural gas furnace and water heater. To learn more about upgrading your current equipment, go to nwnatural.com/Residential/SpecialOffers.
