Celebrate 26 Years of Giving
A Midsummer Night's Dream Charity Event (2009)
What a difference a year makes and what a difference in this year’s 2009 A Midsummer Night’s Dream! As this year’s committee came together to create and mold our event, like an oyster does a pearl, we began to unravel the challenges of producing a gala like never before. In years past, this black tie fundraiser, which has raised $1.2 million for 72 local charities during the past 26 years, has played out in private neighborhoods along closed streets, easily giving guests a sneak preview of the gorgeous luxury homes on the NW Natural Street of Dreams tour.
This year, instead of throwing a party on a private street, we had to find a way to create pathways to luxury condominium homes throughout Portland’s coveted Pearl District. The creativity of the committee was tested and pushed to the limits as they developed new ideas like having restaurants sponsor the event at the various locations, found a uniquely beautiful location to host the start of the event, and found ways to trim the budget in a challenging economy while still creating the ambience and luxury of a black tie affair. And, in the end, the event was a huge success!
This year’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream tipped its hat to the start of the evening with a champagne toast at Portland Center Stage’s fantastically distinct Gerding Theater before extending its coat tails to the nine fantastic NW Natural Street of Dreams condos. Upon arrival at each building, guests enjoyed an array of delectable bites provided Bay 13, Henry’s 12th Street Tavern, Palamino Restaurant Rotisseria & Bar, Paragon Restaurant & Bar, and PF Chang’s China Bistro. An enormous amount of gratitude goes out to these restaurants for literally stepping up to the plate and making this event an evening to remember. Please be sure to stop by these restaurants in the future.
It is also my pleasure to honor the three amazing charities that benefited from this year’s gala. They are the John L. Scott Foundation, which helps children gain access to affordable health care, the Home Builders Foundation, which tirelessly builds, expands and improves homeless shelters throughout the region, and Portland Center Stage, which supports the theater community and highlights the value of human diversity.
Each of these unique organizations provide, much needed, support and volunteers to help serve our community. It was truly a joy to assist them in their efforts. I applaud them and sincerely thank them for all the wonderful things they do.
I would also like to give a standing ovation to our sponsors, Boyd’s Coffee, JMI Limousine, Knight Financial, and Millenium, to Darrell Nelson and his team at NW Natural, and to all those who volunteered their time, labor and supplies to make this dream of an event into a reality.
Last, but certainly not least, a special, sincere thanks goes out to my fellow committee members, Sue DeHarpport, Susan Nellor, and Deborah Finklenburg, as well as HBA staff liaisons Jennifer Wessling, Nancy Haskin, and Eric Stride. I greatly appreciate how they all rose to the occasion and created a fantastic charity event Portland can be proud of!
