Custom designed to the setting, con Amore is constructed with mostly natural materials, including cedar siding and real brick masonry. The only one-level home in the show, con Amore devotes an entire wing to the master retreat. An outdoor terrace creates a paradise for entertaining, complete with wood-burning brick oven that was custom-crafted by a local artisan. You may see the builder pulling his famous home-baked pizzas from the fire when you visit!
- 3,360 Sq. Ft.
- Covered terrace with masonry pizza oven/fireplace and barbecue kitchen

2011 Street of Dreams Magazine
Posted 08/22/2011Blue and Green Are Best Friends
The NW Natural Street of Dreams is a great place to learn about energy efficiency – and the role natural gas plays in energy efficiency.
High-efficiency At this year’s NW Natural Street of Dreams, all five showcase homes are designed with natural gas – and they all have received Earth Advantage Certification. On your home tour, you’ll see natural gas tankless water heaters, fireplace inserts, furnaces, ranges and dryers.
There’s even a natural gas pizza oven and the exciting new freewatt energy system.
Learn more about these great features on High Performance Sunday, August 21.
Reduce lost energy. Did you know that after natural gas travels from the wellhead to your furnace, you still get 92 percent of the energy originally in the gas? In contrast, after converting any fossil fuel into electricity to power a furnace you only get the benefit of32 percent of the fuel’s available energy. That’s how much is lost in the process of creating and transmitting electricity.
With almost half the state’s electricity generated from fossil fuels, direct use of natural gas can save a lot of energy.
Blue and green are friends. Even in the rainy Willamette Valley, homeowners are installing solar panels to pre-heat their water before it goes to their gas water heaters. They’re saving money on their utility bills – and reducing their carbon footprint.
And since we can only rely on wind power about 30 percent of the time, every major Northwest utility has plans to build natural gas electric generation – to firm up wind power and to replace polluting coal plants.
Use less, offset the rest. Although it’s the cleanest fossil fuel, it still emits carbon dioxide. That’s why we encourage you to use gas as efficiently as possible, then offset your emissions through NW Natural’s Smart Energy program. We’re investing in biogas development while helping dairy farmers control methane emissions.

Can you find these objects inside con Amore?
Posted 08/15/2011Dry Up!
The NW Natural Street of Dreams homes stand out for their spacious rooms, elegant surfaces, unique kitchen features and spectacular landscaping.
But we invite you to think beyond the textures and the colors, beyond the fabulous kitchen appliances and the outdoor living areas – to the clothes dryer. For example, check out the Whirlpool natural gas dryer in the Arbor Custom Homes house in this year’s show.
Dryers aren’t the most glamorous appliances, but your choice can make a big difference to your clothes and your monthly utility bills. And as washers and dryers move out of the basement into living areas, you’ll want a dryer that fits your home as well as your dining room table does.
When you’re ready for a new dryer, consider running a gas line to the laundry room. Here are some advantages of a natural gas dryer.
- You can save money on energy costs. High-efficiency natural gas dryers dry your clothes quickly and for less money than electric models.
- Your clothes will love it. Gas dryers fluff and freshen washables with less wrinkling and shrinking. They also reduce static cling. For best results, look for features such as automatic shut-offs, sensor controls, de-wrinkling cycles and automatic cooling-down cycles.
- Gas dryers come in three sizes,so you can stash one in a pantry off your kitchen or buy one to match the capacity of extra large washing machines.
Over time, a natural gas dryer will more than pay for itself in fuel savings, fabric-friendly operation and trouble-free performance.

Cooking with a View
This year’s NW Natural Street of Dreams is defined by its connection to the outdoors. From its lovely natural setting to the lush landscaping, this show’s appeal draws as much on what’s beyond the homes’ walls as what lies inside.
So on precious, warm summer evenings, cooks and their families will want to take advantage of these unique outdoor living spaces. To jumpstart the flow of your creative cooking juices, NW Natural has arranged outdoor cooking demonstrations at each of the showcase homes.
Stop by to get new ideas and taste some of the Northwest’s finest cuisine prepared by local chefs on gas cooking and grilling equipment.
Demonstrations begin at 6:30 p.m. and run for approximately 60 minutes on each Wednesday of the show.

Progress Report: Late July
Decades of Dreams
More than 150 years ago, NW Natural started serving customers in the Portland area. At the time, the company called Portland Gas Light Co., illuminated the community’s stately homes– many of which still grace old Portland neighborhoods.
By the start of the 20th century, electric lights were replacing gas fixtures, and NW Natural moved on to other ways of bringing comfort and convenience to families. Gas ovens and water heaters were some of the first appliances to win over homeowners, followed by gas furnaces.
NW Natural’s earliest customers would feel right at home in the NW Natural Street of Dreams’ Homes – and be quite puzzled at the same time. They would feel comfortable in the warm, spacious settings. But they would be at a loss when asked to identify a tankless water heater or a high-efficiency furnace, let alone a high-def TV screen.
The Street of Dreams tells us a lot about our culture. Regardless of the era, we appreciate gracious settings, lovely landscaping and a connection to nature, as beautifully demonstrated by these homes. But today, we also know we need to tread lightly on that earth we value – as shown by the many sustainable and high-efficiency features in every house.
As always, NW Natural is proud to be the Title Sponsor of this event. We’re also proud to work with Portland’s finest homebuilders in demonstrating the next generation of earth-friendly appliances.

Progess Report: July

America’s Favorite Food Takes Center Stage
The 3,300 square foot con Amore ranch style home includes an outdoor living area that would make Mario Batali feel like a kid in a candy store or at least an Iron Chef with an outdoor pizza oven. As pizza has become America’s favorite food and Portland has become one of America’s favorite food cities the dream builders at Brentwood Homes are building the show’s first outdoor pizza oven.
Letting one lucky homeowner bake pizza, roast vegetables, bake bread and bring amazing meats to the table.
A quick show going hint: Brentwood homes will be sampling pizzas throughout the show so simply follow the smell of fresh baked pizza pie.

Progress Report: May

We continue working on the outside of the house installing siding and stonework, but the inside is where the real action is happening. We have blown in the insulation, put up all the drywall and painting will begin in the next couple of days.
Progress Report: April

We have made a lot of progress in the past couple of months. At this point the house is framed, roofed and windows are being installed.
Progress Report: February

It is cold up here on Bull Mountain, but as you can see we have broken ground on building our 2011 NW Natural Street of Dreams house. The house will be just over 3,300 square feet and we hope to be complete in July. Wish us luck!
